Sydney for Families: Best Private Tours with Kids
By Andrew Sorokin — April 6, 2026 — 7 min read
Travelling with children changes everything — what you can see, how fast you move, and what makes a day successful. I have guided hundreds of families through Sydney and beyond, from toddlers to teenagers. Here is my guide to making the most of Sydney with kids.
Why Families Choose Private Tours
A group bus tour with children is stressful. Fixed schedules, no toilet stops when you need them, no snack breaks, and a pace that suits no one. On a private tour, the day revolves around your family. We stop when the kids need a break, speed up when they are bored, and slow down when something captures their imagination.
My vehicle has child seats and booster seats available at no extra charge. I carry water, snacks, and activity suggestions for different ages. And because it is just your family, there is no pressure to keep up with anyone else.

Best Tours by Age Group
Toddlers and Pre-School (Ages 2–5)
Best tours: Sydney City, Wildlife, Northern Beaches
At this age, short bursts of activity work best. The Sydney City tour is ideal because we mix driving (nap time) with short walks at the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the Royal Botanic Garden where parrots land on outstretched hands. The wildlife tour is a guaranteed hit — no toddler can resist hand-feeding kangaroos and cuddling a koala.
The Northern Beaches tour includes safe, shallow rock pools and calm beaches perfect for little ones to splash in. We keep the walks short and the fun constant.
Primary School (Ages 6–11)
Best tours: Blue Mountains, South Coast, Wildlife
This is the golden age for family touring. Children are old enough to walk, curious about everything, and endlessly excited by new experiences. The Blue Mountains are a winner — Scenic World's rides (including the steepest railway in the world) feel like an adventure, and the rainforest walk beneath the cliffs is genuinely exciting for kids.
The South Coast offers beach play, rock pool exploring, and the thrill of driving over the Sea Cliff Bridge. If your children love animals, combine this with the wildlife tour for kangaroos, echidnas, and kookaburras in their natural habitat. See our guide: where to see wild kangaroos near Sydney.
Teenagers (Ages 12–17)
Best tours: City + Bondi, Blue Mountains Extended, Helicopter
Teenagers want cool experiences they can share on social media. The city tour with Bondi Beach and the coastal walk delivers great content. The Blue Mountains extended tour with Jenolan Caves adds underground exploration that genuinely impresses even the most phone-obsessed teen.
For the ultimate family splurge, the helicopter tour over Sydney Harbour is an experience no teenager will forget. It also works as a short addition to any day tour for families who want something truly special.
Best Family Day Trips from Sydney
Blue Mountains — The All-Ages Favourite
The Blue Mountains consistently rank as the most popular family day trip. Scenic World keeps younger kids engaged with its rides, while the bushwalks and canyon views captivate adults and older children. I adjust the itinerary based on your family — shorter walks for younger kids, longer hikes for active families. For more detail, see our season-by-season Blue Mountains guide.
South Coast — Beaches and Adventures
The Grand Pacific Drive is a stunning coastal road trip. Kids love the Sea Cliff Bridge, the rock pools at Austinmer Beach, and the chance to spot dolphins from the clifftops. The Royal National Park tour adds coastal cliff walks and tidal pools that are endlessly fascinating for children.
Hunter Valley — Yes, Even with Kids
The Hunter Valley is not just for wine lovers. Many cellar doors have gardens where children can play while parents taste. The region also has a chocolate factory, cheese tastings, and wild kangaroos in the vineyards. I plan family-friendly Hunter Valley itineraries that balance adult indulgence with kid-friendly activities. Read our full Hunter Valley guide.
Practical Tips for Touring Sydney with Kids
Start time: I recommend a 9am pickup for families with young children, rather than the 7:30am departure that works for adult groups. A later start means everyone is rested and ready.
Snacks and meals: I build in regular snack and meal stops. I know the family-friendly cafes at every destination, including places with play areas for younger children. Let me know about any dietary requirements or allergies in advance.
Nap time: For families with toddlers, I schedule the longest driving stretch for after lunch. The car movement almost always sends little ones to sleep, and parents get to enjoy the scenery in peace.
Sun safety: Australian sun is intense. Bring hats, sunscreen (SPF 50+), and rash vests for beach visits. I carry spare sunscreen in the vehicle, but children's skin needs dedicated protection.
Pram access: Most lookouts in the Blue Mountains and along the South Coast are pram-accessible on the main paths. Bushwalks and trails generally are not. I plan accordingly for families with prams.
Local Tip: If you have 3 days in Sydney with the family, do the
3-day itinerary: City on Day 1, Blue Mountains on Day 2, and South Coast or Wildlife on Day 3. It gives kids variety and avoids repeating the same type of experience.
